HBOT — INSTANT MESSAGING HONEYPOT

Singapore Polytechnic (SP)
Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM)
Final Year Project

Project Completed 2010

PURPOSE

To provide software that logs down and analyses incoming malicious files/URLs through Instant Messengers.

DESCRIPTION

With the increasing usage of Instant Messaging services, attackers are targeting naive users with malicious files and URL links through Instant Messaging.

There is an urgent need of software that analyses such traffic that seems "normal" and notify the network administrators efficiently.

This project looked into Instant Messenger based attacks. The idea was to allow attackers to target specific machines that will be set up to record their actions over Instant Messenger clients and then log the vital data into a database which can be accessed for further investigation.
